The Portuguese Studies Review is launching a Call for Papers for its Special Issue "The Portuguese in Canada: Presence, Progress, and Prospects," with an expected publication date of 15 January 2004. The official deadline for submissions is 15 September 2003. The deadline for a short abstract of the proposed article is June 1, 2003.

For this issue, the Review will be accepting full-length scholarly papers, short research reports, and literature surveys. The preferred length for papers is c. 8,000 words, for short research reports c. 2,500 to 3,000 words, and for literature surveys a maximum of about 3,000 words. Author's needs in terms of length are open to reasonable accommodation, on a case by case basis. The literature surveys should be closely tied, in terms of relevance, to implications for the future of the Portuguese presence in Canada.

 

PAPERS ARE SOLICITED IN THE FOLLOWING THEMATIC AREAS:

1) Historical perspectives on the Portuguese presence in Canada - from earliest recorded contact to the recent past

2) The current status and position of the Portuguese community The PSR would particularly like to encourage papers with a focus on the following:
- community self-perception and socio-economic dynamics
- women and family structures
- youth (integration, identity economic prospects, etc.)
- the state of the communities outside of Toronto and Montreal
- academic performance and underachievement
- comparison with other ethnic and/or racial minorities
- interethnic relations, especially with other Lusophone groups;
- racism
- religious practices
- relations with Portugal (e.g. return migration, emigrant remittances, business and investment ties, Portuguese gov't policies and practices regarding emigrants in Canada, fiscal and commercial treaties and their impact on the community)
- the role and influence of associations and clubs
- political participation

3) Future trends
- patterns of integration into Canadian society
- emerging trends and projections (demographic, economic, social, political, educational)
